Growing up among the trees in Tiny Township, Ontario, instilled in me a love of nature. I had a magical childhood. Summers were for camping, horseback riding, and pretending to be a Georgian Bay mermaid with my sisters. Winters were for nordic skiing. I trained and raced with Team Hardwood for several years before beginning to share my fascination with our natural and cultural heritage as an interpreter with Huronia Historical Parks and a natural heritage educator with Awenda Provincial Park.

I lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia for several years while completing a combined honours degree in English and creative writing. When I finished my undergraduate degree, I returned to Ontario to coach cross country skiing and make skiing accessible for elementary school students as the Program Coordinator of a skiing in the schoolyard program. Still in love with words and stories, I then studied creative book publishing at Humber College in Toronto, Ontario, before completing my Bachelor of Education at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. It was during my environmental education class and teaching placements that I realized I want a career that respects and encourages a love of the environment, including helping others forge nature connections. I then worked as the Educational Tourism Program Development Intern at the Elk Lake Eco Centre in northern Ontario, and I am delighted to continue my outdoor education experience in British Columbia.

I am thrilled to be a part of the Evans Lake team, and I especially look forward to helping expand winter educational programs and programs for the general public. I am excited to have fun growing together through programs that encourage discovery and respect our environment.

My first experience with Evans Lake was with the Junior Forest Wardens as a camper in 1965 and 1967. In 1973 I was a Cabin Councillor for 5 camps and then worked as part of the work party crew. Through the Junior Forest Wardens, I have used Evans Lake as the central site to teach children of all ages about forestry, woods travel and ecology. All 4 of my children and most of my step children, have experienced Evans Lake. And more recently my grandchildren come to summer camp. In my 32 year airline career I have used many experiences and lessons learned here at Evans Lake to be promoted. I started as a baggage handler, then load master and using the talents learned at Evans Lake, I was promoted to Senior Lead Instructor / Manpower Planner with Canadian Airlines and then Air Canada.

After retiring from Air Canada, I worked with Contemporary Security in their Communication Operations department during the 2010 Olympics and then again in Toronto during the G8 G20 world conference. I worked for Paladin Security services as a Security Guard for 2 ½ years.  I have also worked as a part time caretaker in our Condo apartment complex since 2008.

Over the years, I always wished I could return to work at camp, and here I am now. I spent the first 7 years of my life growing up in a logging camp, so it just makes sense that I will retire from an outdoor forestry camp in 7 years.

Ever since I played a game of Survival as a 9-year old in the Evans Lake forest – a game where each camper represents an animal seeking food & water and avoiding predators – I have been excited to share my enthusiasm for Evans Lake’s programs and get others involved. Having now participated in Evans Lake’s Leadership program, been a Volunteer, Cabin Leader, Instructor, Assistant Director, and now as the Program Director, I have a rich understanding of how to adapt our Forest Education programs to leave campers excited to explore forests!

Before joining Evans Lake as the Program Director I completed a double-major in Sociology & English Literature (UBC), and since then I have entered both the Photography Certificate Program (Langara), and the Advanced Project Management Certificate Program (Langara). Specific forest education initiatives that I am keen to have been a part of at Evans Lake include introducing new modules focused on Climate Change, Forest Tenure, Silviculture, Urban Forestry, Business & Marketing, Mensuration, Forest Ecology and Forest Certification. In 2011, we hosted our first Forest Education Symposium for Teachers (FEST) where we provided teacher-training and forest education modules that can be easily adapted to any classroom and taught in parks, remote forests, or right out the front-door of any school!

My diverse educational background and years of Evans Lake experience have helped me bring a balanced and well-rounded approach to our programs, and the management of our Summer and Winter Camps.

In grade four,  I had the pleasure of coming to Evans Lake for a week long program with my elementary school. I thought it was so magical and loved every second of it. When I turned 14, I returned to Evans Lake as a Camper. I was hooked! For the next 10 years I worked the camp programs, transitioning from work party to counsellor to instructor, first aid attendant and lifeguard. Evans Lake became my summer home and a huge part of who I am today.

After completing my undergraduate degree in Art History, I traveled abroad starting in my birthplace of Argentina. From there I joined Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines working with youth programs. After 5 years of working & travelling at sea, I moved to Whistler, working as the Quality & Brand Assurance Manager for the Hilton Hotel. It was in this role, that I learned the inner workings of the hotel including sales, food & beverage, catering, conference services and guest relations. In 2008, I returned to school and completed the Business Management program at BCIT. More recently, I worked for an event management company in Vancouver, both as an Event Manager, and as the Marketing Coordinator. I managed large corporate groups during the 2010 Olympic Games and handled the marketing initiatives including social media, website management and the creation of the promotional materials.

My education combined with my past work experiences have prepared me to lead the team at Evans Lake,  as the Executive Director. I am excited to grow the society, and to expand on the opportunities for children to discover the ‘Magic’ that is Evans Lake.

Board of Directors

The Evans Lake Forest Education Society Board of Directors is composed of volunteers, elected annually, at the Annual General Meeting held in April. The Board meets monthly to review the operations and financials of the Society.

Gabrielle

Instructor

I’m beyond excited to be returning to Evans Lake this summer and see so many familiar faces! My favourite part about camp would have to be the spontaneous dance parties and a good game of gaga ball. See you at the lake 💗!

Temma

Instructor

This is my third year at Evans Lake! I’m so excited to spend another summer planning awesome activities with the LITs, and hiking and canoeing through the mountains. My favourite parts of camp are looking for caddisflies in the creek, camp-wide Fireflies dance parties, and how an ordinary sandwich tastes like a 5-star meal when you’re eating it from a sunny mountain lookout after a morning of hiking.

Teagan

Cabin Leader

Third year back and BEYOND excited! Summer camp has been the only way I have spent my summer for as long as I can remember and I cannot wait for all the rock climbing, riddles, forest games, hikes and lifelong friendships that this year will bring. Find me out in a canoe on the lake or making friendship bracelets in the shade and I will try my absolute best to make you smile! See you up at camp this summer!!

Max

Cabin Leader

I’ve always enjoyed the outdoors, so I’m excited to start working at Evans Lake. I love that at camp there’s always something happening, whether that’s games or crafts or something else. It’s hard to pick a favorite activity out of so many but I’m always partial to a good canoe ride.

Lindsay

Registration Coordinator

Born and raised on the West Coast, I’ve been coming to Evans Lake for 14 years, five of those as staff. It’s home. It’s where I feel happiest. I can’t get enough of the fresh air, and of helping make memories for generations of campers. I’m passionate about environmental sustainability, and about BC’s outdoors. When I’m not working at camp, you can catch me taking photos, cooking, jamming to music, or trail running with my dog in the great outdoors!

Lucas

Instructor

I have been coming to camp for around 13 years now, three of those as staff, which to me is astonishing because I haven’t changed much in all that time! Camp has been my home during the summer and the amount of friends you make and the fun you have can’t be beat! My favourite part of it all has to be the food – no one does it better than here at Evans Lake!

Lauren

Instructor

This will be my first year at Evans Lake and I could not be more excited to join the 2018 team as the Eco Fun Coordinator all the way from the East Coast of Canada! I love being outdoors, exploring nature, taking photos and meeting new people! My favourite thing about camp is evening campfires under the stars and singing campfire songs.

Kei

Cabin Leader

Last year, when my mom dragged me off to a yoga retreat in Squamish, I discovered two things: yoga is harder than it seems, and Evans Lake, which was right next door. Evans Lake has always stuck with me, and I’m excited to start my first year in a job that has the three things that I love: talking to and meeting new people, swimming in lakes, and being in the great outdoors!

Katherine

Volunteer Coordinator

Thanks to all the amazing staff and campers, I’m coming back this year for my fifth summer working at Evans Lake. I love making new friends, and the inclusive atmosphere at Evans Lake is what really gets me excited to meet new people. Waking up for an early morning polar bear dip is one of my favourite activities – it really helps me get ready for the exciting day to come!

Katie

Cabin Leader

After an amazing summer of being part of the volunteer Work Crew last year, I am beyond excited to be coming back this summer as a Cabin Leader! Being an avid outdoors person there is no place I would rather spend my summer than at Evans Lake, where I get to share my love for the forest with so many amazing people. My favorite thing about camp has got to be just seeing everyone having so much fun all the time and leaving at the end of the week with tons of new friends and memories. Camp life is the best life!

Kai

Cabin Leader

Hey there, I’m Kai! This will be my second year cabin leading at Evans Lake, and I couldn’t me more excited! There’s nothing better than spending summer in the beautiful British Columbian rainforests. At camp, my favourite activities include hiking, campfires, and archery!

John

Instructor

Hi everyone, I’m John and this is my first year with Evens Lake, I am so excited for all the adventures we are about to have. My favourite part about camp has always been dressing up in costume and doing skits around the campfire. More than anything I am looking forward to laying in the grass and telling stories about the stars after the sun sets.

Jasmin

Instructor

I started going to Evans Lake in 2010 and I fell in love with the sense of family everyone brings. When I’m not at camp I spend my days looking for new ways to stay active. At camp, you can find me exploring the waterfront or walking the forest looking for new wildlife.

Jacob

Cabin Leader

Having spent my last ten summers at Evans Lake, I am thrilled to be returning for another season at camp! For me, my enjoyment of camp stems from the atmosphere of empathy and support I have always felt here, and I enjoy sharing such an environment with everyone else passing through. Going into the summer, I look forward to spending time in our beautiful forests and ending each day with campfire songs overlooking the lake.

Isabelle

Cabin Leader

Last year was my first time at Evans Lake and I can’t wait to return this summer as a Cabin Leader. Camp is such a positive experience and I love spending time meeting new people! Going to be a great adventure!

Georgia

Instructor

This is my first summer at Evans Lake and I could not be more excited! I wanted to join the Evans Lake team to spend another summer on the west coast in a beautiful place with awesome staff and campers! My favourite thing about camp is getting to spend lots of time outside and my favourite camp activities are rock climbing and roasting marshmallows!

Clara

Cabin Leader

My name is Clara! I’ve been going to camp since I was 10 years old and have fallen in love with Evans Lake since my very first day. My favourite thing about camp is how many friends you make as soon as you step on the bus (as well as the themed meals, of course)! My favourite thing to do at camp is to go on the overnight hike because you get to learn about hiking and you get to see the forest from a whole new perspective!

Cameron

Senior Instructor

Well what can I say? I can’t get enough of this place! Since I was 9 years old Evans Lake has been my home and I’m not ready to leave it just yet. Going into my 6th year working here I can’t wait to bring the same magic that captured me when I first arrived. I’m looking forward to all the new adventures, wacky costumes, and peaceful moments by the lake this summer will have to offer.

Brandon

Cabin Leader

This is my first year at my Evans Lake, a place where I can engage in forest education in such a beautiful and natural environment. I love the teamwork aspect of camp where I can form life-long bonds. I am super excited for campfire and making the occasional friendship bracelet with campers!

Elora

Senior Instructor

Hi everyone, I’m so excited for another season at camp and a second summer up at Evans Lake! There is nothing better than spending the summer in the forest with such amazing co-workers and campers. My favourite things to do at camp are work on my plant identification skills and have dance parties!

Alec

Cabin Leader

I’m an aspiring music journalist, and a north shore local. I am always looking for adventure so spending the summer at Evans Lake means there will be no shortage of outdoor activities!

Jess

Instructor

A Québec native, I am super excited to make my way out West to join the Evans Lake team this summer. I’m looking forward to making new friends and exploring and learning about nature through all kinds of outdoor activities. I love the warm, tight-knit atmosphere summer camp creates and my favourite activities would have to be embarking on scavenger hunts or trail running!

Jonathan

Cabin Leader

I have been coming to Evans Lake for six years. I love the nature surrounding Evans Lake and all the people who make this place great! My favourite things to do at camp are to play forest games and to canoe!

Marquita

Cabin Leader

This is going to be my sixth summer that I will have the fortune of being at Evans Lake for! Coming first as a camper, I quickly fell in love with the beautiful location and positive atmosphere at the camp. My favorite parts of camp are the overnight hikes, and the themed meals that we get to come dressed up to.

Bronwyn

Cabin Leader

While I’ve been to summer camp as kid, I’m excited to say that this will be my first year at Evans Lake! I’m looking forward to meeting new people in such a beautiful location. One of the reasons I applied to Evans Lake is because of my passion for the environment and my love for exploring the outdoors, so I’m really looking forward to going on hikes and nature walks.

Aidan

Cabin Leader

This is my third summer at Evans Lake, and since I’ve been coming here, Evans Lake has felt like nothing less than my second home. I love fun-filled days packed with activity to activity to make the most of our days. I especially enjoy big themed days! My favourite camp activity besides campfire stories is definitely when I first get to welcome my cabin onsite – it means we’re going to have fun all week!
