Growing up among the trees in Tiny Township, Ontario, instilled in me a love of nature. I had a magical childhood. Summers were for camping, horseback riding, and pretending to be a Georgian Bay mermaid with my sisters. Winters were for nordic skiing. I trained and raced with Team Hardwood for several years before beginning to share my fascination with our natural and cultural heritage as an interpreter with Huronia Historical Parks and a natural heritage educator with Awenda Provincial Park.

I lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia for several years while completing a combined honours degree in English and creative writing. When I finished my undergraduate degree, I returned to Ontario to coach cross country skiing and make skiing accessible for elementary school students as the Program Coordinator of a skiing in the schoolyard program. Still in love with words and stories, I then studied creative book publishing at Humber College in Toronto, Ontario, before completing my Bachelor of Education at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. It was during my environmental education class and teaching placements that I realized I want a career that respects and encourages a love of the environment, including helping others forge nature connections. I then worked as the Educational Tourism Program Development Intern at the Elk Lake Eco Centre in northern Ontario, and I am delighted to continue my outdoor education experience in British Columbia.

I am thrilled to be a part of the Evans Lake team, and I especially look forward to helping expand winter educational programs and programs for the general public. I am excited to have fun growing together through programs that encourage discovery and respect our environment.

We are happy to have David joins the Evans Lake family, in the role of Food Services Manager. David comes to us from Furry Creek Golf Course, where he held the position of Executive Chef. David’s extensive food services background, coupled with witty English humour, makes him the perfect fit for our team.

My first experience with Evans Lake was with the Junior Forest Wardens as a camper in 1965 and 1967. In 1973 I was a Cabin Councillor for 5 camps and then worked as part of the work party crew. Through the Junior Forest Wardens, I have used Evans Lake as the central site to teach children of all ages about forestry, woods travel and ecology. All 4 of my children and most of my step children, have experienced Evans Lake. And more recently my grandchildren come to summer camp. In my 32 year airline career I have used many experiences and lessons learned here at Evans Lake to be promoted. I started as a baggage handler, then load master and using the talents learned at Evans Lake, I was promoted to Senior Lead Instructor / Manpower Planner with Canadian Airlines and then Air Canada.

After retiring from Air Canada, I worked with Contemporary Security in their Communication Operations department during the 2010 Olympics and then again in Toronto during the G8 G20 world conference. I worked for Paladin Security services as a Security Guard for 2 ½ years.  I have also worked as a part time caretaker in our Condo apartment complex since 2008.

Over the years, I always wished I could return to work at camp, and here I am now. I spent the first 7 years of my life growing up in a logging camp, so it just makes sense that I will retire from an outdoor forestry camp in 7 years.

Ever since I played a game of Survival as a 9-year old in the Evans Lake forest – a game where each camper represents an animal seeking food & water and avoiding predators – I have been excited to share my enthusiasm for Evans Lake’s programs and get others involved. Having now participated in Evans Lake’s Leadership program, been a Volunteer, Cabin Leader, Instructor, Assistant Director, and now as the Program Director, I have a rich understanding of how to adapt our Forest Education programs to leave campers excited to explore forests!

Before joining Evans Lake as the Program Director I completed a double-major in Sociology & English Literature (UBC), and since then I have entered both the Photography Certificate Program (Langara), and the Advanced Project Management Certificate Program (Langara). Specific forest education initiatives that I am keen to have been a part of at Evans Lake include introducing new modules focused on Climate Change, Forest Tenure, Silviculture, Urban Forestry, Business & Marketing, Mensuration, Forest Ecology and Forest Certification. In 2011, we hosted our first Forest Education Symposium for Teachers (FEST) where we provided teacher-training and forest education modules that can be easily adapted to any classroom and taught in parks, remote forests, or right out the front-door of any school!

My diverse educational background and years of Evans Lake experience have helped me bring a balanced and well-rounded approach to our programs, and the management of our Summer and Winter Camps.

In grade four,  I had the pleasure of coming to Evans Lake for a week long program with my elementary school. I thought it was so magical and loved every second of it. When I turned 14, I returned to Evans Lake as a Camper. I was hooked! For the next 10 years I worked the camp programs, transitioning from work party to counsellor to instructor, first aid attendant and lifeguard. Evans Lake became my summer home and a huge part of who I am today.

After completing my undergraduate degree in Art History, I traveled abroad starting in my birthplace of Argentina. From there I joined Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines working with youth programs. After 5 years of working & travelling at sea, I moved to Whistler, working as the Quality & Brand Assurance Manager for the Hilton Hotel. It was in this role, that I learned the inner workings of the hotel including sales, food & beverage, catering, conference services and guest relations. In 2008, I returned to school and completed the Business Management program at BCIT. More recently, I worked for an event management company in Vancouver, both as an Event Manager, and as the Marketing Coordinator. I managed large corporate groups during the 2010 Olympic Games and handled the marketing initiatives including social media, website management and the creation of the promotional materials.

My education combined with my past work experiences have prepared me to lead the team at Evans Lake,  as the Executive Director. I am excited to grow the society, and to expand on the opportunities for children to discover the ‘Magic’ that is Evans Lake.

Board of Directors

The Evans Lake Forest Education Society Board of Directors is composed of volunteers, elected annually, at the Annual General Meeting held in April. The Board meets monthly to review the operations and financials of the Society.

Summer Camp Staff

Our 2019 program staff team members!

Teagan

Instructor

Hi! My name is Teagan and this is my 10th summer jumping into the lake and running around the Evans Lake forest. I absolutely love making new friends and trying new things at camp. When I’m not making friendship bracelets on the field, you can find me searching for new species in the creek!

Ève

Instructor

This summer is my first at Evans Lake. The enchanting location and fun hiking activities are what attracted me to work here. I love the adventures that occur when discovering new places, whether it’s by canoeing or by playing hide-and-seek! My favorite thing about camp is playing ukulele and making new friends around a campfire.

Temma

Instructor

This will be my fourth year working at Evans Lake! I’m excited to explore our forests and mountains in canoes, with hiking backpacks, and, of course, while running through them dressed in wild costumes trying to capture flags and tag squirrels. My favourite parts of camp are looking for creatures in the lakes and streams, and sunny snack breaks after long hikes. See you this summer!

Nicole

Cabin Leader

Hello! I’ve been a camper at Evans Lake since the age of eight and this will be my second summer as staff. I love the inviting atmosphere camp has to offer and my favourite camp activities include forest games and campfires.

Max

Cabin Leader + Instructor

I am super excited to be returning for my second year at Evans Lake! I love always being immersed in nature. I also love all the friendships and fun that camp brings. If you’ve found a cool plant, bug, or dance move, come find me!

Lindsay

Registration Coordinator

I’ve been coming to Evans Lake for 15 years, six of those as staff. There’s something so spectacular about the forest, the lake, and the people. I can’t get enough. When I’m not working at camp, you can catch me taking photos, cooking, jamming to music, or trail running with my dog in the great outdoors!

Lucas

Volunteer Coordinator

This will be my fifth summer returning to Evans Lake as staff and I’ve attended as a camper for many years prior as well. Evans Lake is a home away from home for me and I have always loved how easy it is to make life long friendships. My favourite activity is definitely a classic game of stones, even if most campers outrun me at this point!

Sarah

Instructor

Hi everyone! While I’ve worked at other camps before, I am so excited to be joining you at Evans Lake for my first summer! I’ve never been to the West Coast of Canada, but a couple of knowledgeable friends from the camp circuit said that it was the best! My favourite part about camp is swapping stories and developing amazing relationships with people while spending time in nature. It may seem a little simple, but my favourite camp activity is hiking – I really like that it’s something that everyone gets to do at their own pace and generate their own meaningful experience from.

Kei

Cabin Leader

Going into my second year working at camp and I am ECSTATIC to be seeing so many happy camp faces again. Surprise dance parties, campfire singing, and the stars in Squamish are what I live for, so catch me in the vicinity of one, or all three of these during the summer. See ya at the lake!

Jo

Instructor

Ahoy! I am so stoked to be joining the Evans Lake team again for my second season! My favourite things at camp are forest games, lake swims and campfires! I’m super excited to meet some awesome people and have an amazing time at camp!

Katie

Cabin Leader

After having two amazing summers at Evans Lake, how could I not come back for a third?! I’m super excited to be coming back this summer for more fun, swims, and laughs. My favourite things about camp have got to be stories under the beautiful starry sky, and the endless laughter that can be heard all through the summer.

Nick

Cabin Leader

This will be my first year at Evans Lake Camp! I heard about Evans Lake through their website and their beautiful grounds were just amazing so I had to join this camp family! I have been a part of the camp life since I was a kid, and my favourite part is the family that is fostered between counselors and campers alike! My favourite activity at camp has got to be sitting back after a great day of activities with my campmates around a fire!

John

Senior Instructor

My name is John (aka Moose) and this will be my second year at Evans Lake. My favourite activity at camp is the overnight hike. I love it because all the staff and campers work to support each other as a team. The supportive the camp environment is probably the reason I keep coming back!

Jasmin

Instructor

This will be my 10th year at Evans Lake and my 4th year as staff. I’m super excited to be back for another summer and can’t wait to jump in the lake, go on some of my favourite hikes, and make a friendship bracelet or two. When I’m not at camp you can find me exploring the city and longing to be back at Evans Lake.

Tim

Cabin Leader

I’m looking forward to my first year at Evans Lake! I love being outside, listening to the forest, breathing the fresh air and taking in the sights. My favourite part of camp would be hiking or going for a paddle.

Stella

Cabin Leader

This summer will be my 9th year at Evans Lake and I’m super excited to be returning as a cabin leader! I really love spending the summer with people who love being outdoors a as much as I do. My favourite thing about camp is playing games – both on the field and in the forest!

Georgia

Camp Coordinator + Instructor

This is my second year at Evans Lake and I could not be more excited to come back! I love getting to spend all day outside exploring the beautiful, lush forest that we are so lucky to have here at EL. It is because of this, that forest exploration time is my favourite camp activity! I love catching salamander nymphs in the marshes during early summer and then putting them back in their homes before exploring new areas.

Elliot

Cabin Leader

This summer is my sixth year at Evans Lake, and my first year as a full-time cabin leader! As you can see from the picture, I love to have a fun and silly time at camp; anytime I can dress up and dance around is a good time. I hope to be able to help bring all the fun and excitement I felt as a camper at Evans Lake to all the campers this summer!

Alex

Cabin Leader

I have been going to Evans Lake for 6 years as of this summer! The best thing about the camp atmosphere is how it’s so open to individuality and lets people be whoever they’d like. My favourite activities at camp – besides the swimming, of course – are the hikes and out-trips we take through the beautiful mountains that surround the camp.

Luke

Cabin Leader

Kia Ora! I’ve come over from New Zealand to work at Evans Lake for the first time which is very exciting. I can’t wait to immerse myself in all kinds of outdoor adventures, along with some great new friends of all ages. I’m sure my snack-packing knowledge will be useful, as well as the sharing of Hobbit riddles.

Elora

Senior Instructor

Hi everyone! I’m so excited for another season at camp – I just can’t seem to stay away! I am so grateful to spend the summer in the forest on the unceded territory of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation with such amazing co-workers and campers. My favourite things to do at camp are work on my plant identification skills and have dance parties.

Alec

Cabin Leader

Almost a decade ago, I spent a few summers as a camper at Evans Lake, and this year I’m coming back for my second summer as a cabin leader! I’m beyond excited to be coming back to this beautiful place with its family atmosphere and reuniting with some familiar family and some new family as well! My favourite camp activity isn’t a specific activity at all, but I find it amazing when someone has a wild, out of the box idea for the week that makes the whole camp experience unique and special or everyone who resides at the lake for the week.

Simon

Cabin Leader

I’ve been coming to Evans Lake since 2012, previously in a camper and then a volunteer capacity, and I’m I’m super excited to be a cabin leader this year! I love being in nature and connecting with everyone at camp. My favourite camp activity is looking at the stars on overnight hikes.

Hannah

Cabin Leader

This will be my fifth summer at Evans Lake, and I am beyond excited for another amazing summer spent here. I love the beautiful forest atmosphere and the exciting activity-filled days. My favourite camp activities are definitely the overnight hikes that allow you to explore new lakes and forests, and of course the classic campfires!

Marquita

Cabin Leader

Whether its playing survival in the forest or just drinking hot chocolate at the campfire, the magic of Evans Lake has remained the same since my first year as a camper, six years ago. My favorite parts of camp are the overnight hikes and the themed meals, and I can’t wait to spend another summer hanging out in the forest with such incredible people!

Aidan

Cabin Leader + Instructor

This will be my 4th summer on the staff team and all I can think of are the memories every single day creates – from the endless activities, to the overnight hikes, to the stories that are told. Camp brings in an opportunity and belonging for everyone to be themselves, and I’m excited to be a part of your summer!
